The turnover of the burger brand Wendy’s increased by almost 50% last year during a period of rapid growth.

The chain, famous for its square hamburgers, doubled the number of restaurants owned by its company from six to twelve in 2023.

Turnover increased from £21.2m in 2022 to £31.9m in 2023, while profit before tax fell slightly from £1.4m to £1.2m.

The chain returned to the UK in 2021 after a 20-year hiatus. Since then, it has opened 33 franchised and company-owned restaurants, with new sites due to open this year in Liverpool, Newcastle and Wood Green, London.

Wendy’s increased its workforce from 376 employees in 2022 to 436 in 2023, and the company has announced plans to add up to 400 new jobs this year.

Founded in Columbus, Ohio, in 1969, Wendy’s currently has over 6,000 restaurants in the United States, with no European locations outside of the United Kingdom. The brand plans to use the UK as a launching pad to expand into the European market and is actively looking for franchises in Ireland and Spain.
