A vibrant and diverse school community in East Manchester ensures equality of opportunity and excellence for students.
The East Manchester Academy (TEMA) equips students with the skills, abilities, attributes and qualifications to pursue a fulfilling career, contribute positively to their communities and be active, global citizens.
Helping them achieve their GCSEs, BTEC and other Level 2 qualifications, the academy provides the vital tools for its students to achieve their true potential and ensures that everyone has the chance to do so.
Part of Greater Manchester Education Trust – a small multi-academy trust comprising the academy and three other Manchester high schools – TEMA’s work is underpinned by cooperative values and a shared commitment to teamwork.
It has high expectations and high ambitions for all members of its school community, setting challenging targets and striving to achieve them together.
TEMA has a clear passion for its local community and is proud of the rich and varied history of Manchester, endeavouring to make its students feel a strong sense of belonging and a true sense of pride in their community.
This appreciation is reciprocated through the strategic partners that the academy has exceptionally strong links with, meaning students benefit from a wealth of extended opportunities to grow their skills and realise their potential.
TEMA’s approach is to inspire curiosity and creativity through engaging content and inclusive teaching with a focus on developing students as life-long learners.
The curriculum is ambitious, broad and balanced, and all staff understand the importance of equipping students with skills for life.
Recently awarded the One Education Reading Award, the academy realises that vocabulary development is an important element of this vision. Following the motto ‘reading is fundamental’, it has a TEMA Reads programme which sees structured time built into the school day for reading, inter-disciplinary literacy worked into the curriculum and bespoke support offered.
But it is more than just academic study which enriches the students of TEMA – the academy’s curriculum goes beyond that which is learned within a classroom.
It recognises that access to and participation in extra-curricular activities is an important part of building students’ soft skills and consequently an important building block in the foundations of social mobility.
Therefore TEMA aims to build students’ cultural capital through exposure to enrichment activities and celebrates and embraces the different backgrounds, heritage, languages and traditions of all students.
Its Personal Development division provides a broad range of opportunities to enable them to develop their individual talents and broader character, giving them the confidence, resilience and knowledge so that they can keep themselves mentally and physically healthy.
This, and the successful provision of academic study and support, is achieved through TEMA’s dedication to embracing new ideas and ensuring that its curriculum and teaching styles are constantly developed and honed to suit the modern-day world.
