Jenna Ortega, star of the hugely popular Netflix Wednesday series, may have put his future with the show in doubt following his latest comments.
Season 1 director Tim Burton is currently hard at work developing Season 2 after a cast and writer strike, and the show became one of Netflix’s biggest hits in November 2022.
Netflix reportedly did Wednesday a key development during the strikes, as the studio surely wants to get one of its most successful shows back to fans sooner rather than later.
Jenna Ortega – Wednesday No More?
In the new episode The City with Matthew Bellonipodcast host expressed his belief that Jenna Ortega is no longer a part of Netflix Wednesday series after the upcoming Season 2 is completed, as Ortega made a statement on Dax Shephard’s podcast in March 2023.
Speaking with Bloomberg’s Lucas Shaw, Belloni reflected on Ortega’s comments:
“Next up is the Did I Say That Out Loud media tooth of the year award. I’m giving this to Jenna Ortega, who managed to screw up her own show in an interview on the Dax Shepherd podcast. She basically said the scripts weren’t good for Wednesday. Remember, this is the most successful show in Netflix history. “
Belloni also watched Ortega explain it “had to come up with the famous TikTok dance scene” after saying episode 4 no flash mobile. Ortega told Shephard that he never had “had to put my foot down on the series” how he did in this series:
“He said he had to come up with the famous TikTok dance scene. It was supposed to be a flash mob, but he blocked it, saying, “I don’t think I’ve ever had to set foot on set. just like i had to on wednesday. It’s not great when your lead actor screws up your very successful TV show.”
Ortega actually shared that “foot down” quote verbatim. Here he is full Wednesday comments about his time on Dax Shepard’s podcast:
“I don’t think I’ve ever had to put my foot down on stage the way I did on Wednesday because it’s so easy to fall into that category, especially in this type of show… There were times on that set when I became almost unprofessional in a way, where I just started changing lines. The script director thought I was going to do something, and then I had to sit down with the writers and they were like, “Wait, what happened to the scene?” And I would have to go through and explain why I couldn’t do certain things…”
Shaw was incredulous at those remarks and commented how Wednesday Cast and crew “I haven’t even started filming the second season” but several years after designing the series:
“Really weird because it was such a huge hit and completely changed the trajectory of his career, and they haven’t even started filming a second season either, which he should want to happen because it could still make him a huge star. . . I just don’t understand what he’s doing .”
And now, Belloni – who served as editorial director at the company The Hollywood Reporter from 2016 to 2020 – predicts that Ortega will not be part Wednesday “after the second season” Also note how Netflix is “developing spin-offs like the Uncle Fester show” in preparation for Ortega’s possible departure:
Belloni: “Yeah, I have… We’re not doing the call sheet today, but I have a forecast for Wednesday. I don’t think Jenna Ortega will be on the show after season two.”
Shaw: “I think that’s a safe prediction.”
Belloni: “I think there’s a reason they’re developing spin-offs like the Uncle Fester show and the others they have in the works. And I feel like this could be two and done for him.”
Where is Netflix Wednesday going?
Hearing these comments from Jenna Ortega and Matthew Belloni is certainly disappointing, especially since the smashing star’s future is now in serious doubt. Wednesday brought so much success to Netflix.
This is also coupled with the removal of Percy Hynes White’s Xavier Thorpe after the actor was accused of sexual assault, which only makes the long-term prospects of the show more difficult.
The filming of the second season was already delayed due to strikes. When filming begins in April, Netflix may have to decide where to go next.
Of course, Wednesday The cast is full of capable characters and actors who could be used for spin-offs, including Fred Armisen’s aforementioned Uncle Fester or even Luis Guzman and Catherine Zeta-Jones’ Gomez and Morticia Addams.
But because Ortega was such a big star after his performance on Wednesday, especially after his performance Beetlejuice 2 on the horizon, the future of this series is quite an uphill battle.
season 1 / Wednesday now streaming on Netflix. Filming for the second season will begin in April.
