Set to open in Westminster for just two days between 7 and 9 October, The 55k Tonnes Uber pub will see punters generating electricity on a fleet of power bikes. The latest PR stunt from the taxi app and delivery giant, it claims to be the first pub of its kind capable of creating more electricity than it uses. Alongside energy-making cycling technology, The 55k Tonnes also features Pavegen smart flooring which converts every footstep into electrical power.

The pop-up pub celebrates a significant milestone: the 55,000 tonnes of air pollution reduced in London due to Uber’s electrification efforts since 2021. To mark the achievement, from 5:50pm happy hour pints will cost just £5.50. Among other low-impact brews on draft, the boozer will serve Swell, a carbon-negative lager by South London’s Gypsy Hill Brewing made with regeneratively grown, bio-diverse barley from Wildfarmed.

Every sustainable pint sold at the pub will earn a 55% Uber Green discount to encourage eco-friendly travel options to get home safely. The electric-only service launched three years ago, while rides cost the same as standard UberX fares drivers earn an average 10% more than standard petrol-powered trips.

General manager at Uber UK, Andrew Brem, Said: “In the UK pubs are where we exchange ideas and opinions, and what better way to promote a dialogue on electrification in the UK than with a carbon-negative pub.

“The opening of The 55k Tonnes in Westminster showcases Uber’s commitment to sustainability in London and beyond.”

It comes in the lead up to Uber’s second annual climate event, GO-GET Zero, a sustainability product showcase to promote ways Uber is encouraging riders, couriers, drivers and merchants

The 55k Tonnes will open on 46 Great Peter Street between 1pm and 10:30pm.

Uber’s pop-up isn’t leading the only eco-destination. Rubbing shoulders with the best pubs in the capital are several sustainable restaurants in London, each of them making a real difference.
