A Eurostar train driving along surrounded by greenery

For decades, Eurostar’s St Pancras service has been the only way to ride the rails from London to the continent, but now this east London station is set to finally fulfil its Channel Tunnel promise.

East Londoners and travellers from the wider southeast could soon enjoy a faster, less crowded alternative right on their doorstep. With Uber’s global brand and tech working hand-in-hand with Gemini’s rail expertisethe future of European rail adventures for Londoners is looking more accessible and more exciting than ever.

Uber-Gemini trains from London to Europe

Uber is set to redefine international travel from Londonunveiling a bold plan to launch high-speed trains whisking passengers from Stratford in east London directly to continental hotspots like Paris, Brussels, and Lille by 2029. In partnership with Gemini Trainsthis ambitious project aims to disrupt Eurostar’s long-standing dominance and bring a new era of app-powered, seamlessly bookable cross-Channel journeys – direct from one of London’s biggest stations.

From Stratford International to Europe

Stratford International stationbuilt to handle cross-Channel passenger traffic but never used for this purpose, is set to come into its own. Gemini Trains’ CEO likens Stratford’s vibe to London City Airport – unfussy, quick, and far less hectic than Heathrow or Gatwick.

Thanks to connections via the Elizabeth Line, Jubilee Line, Overground and National Railtravellers can zip from central London to Stratford in minutes. The new service is expected to add stops at Ebbsflets and Ashford International stations in Kent, reviving these Channel Tunnel gateways for international journeys.

What will the Uber-Gemini service offer?

Gemini and Uber plan to run a fleet of 10 high-speed trains, all bookable through the Uber app for streamlined, integrated ticketing. The projected journey time from Stratford to Paris is claimed to be as quick or quicker than the current Eurostar service out of St Pancras.

The service will compete head-to-head with Virgin’s planned Channel Tunnel trains and new international players like Trenitalia, finally offering real “hop on in east London, hop off in Paris” convenience.

What’s next

The plans are ambitious, but hurdles remain: Gemini must secure rolling stock, funding, and regulatory approval, plus upgrade Stratford’s passport control and security facilities to handle international traffic.

While Uber brings the brand clout and mobility tech, many logistics and infrastructure details still need hashing out before trains depart in 2029-2030.
