Chippy-loving Londonerslisten up, because one of the biggest events in the fish and chip calendar (if it’s not already a thing, it should be) has recently taken place. Following months of rigorous research, FRY Magazine have just announced the winners of their 13th annual FRY Awards. The fish-and-chip fanatics have spent the past few months travelling and tasting their way across the country, secretly assessing thousands of fish and chip shops to decipher the best of the best. I mean, someone’s got to do it, right?
They evaluated takeaways, restaurants, and mobile units across the UK, basing their judgement on factors including food quality, cleanliness, staff expertise, value for money, and ease of ordering. Taking all of those elements into account, they’ve announced the 50 best fish and chip takeaways and the 10 best fish and chip restaurants in the country. And although, yes, we all know that fish and chips reign supreme at the seaside, it turns out that are also some decent plaices in the capital citytoo. And two London spots managed to reel the judges in hook, line, and sinker.
Toff’s, Muswell Hill

Established in 1968Toff’s is a true Muswell Hill stalwart, beloved by locals and visitors alike. Serving up super fresh fish, coated in their specially-blend batter, it’s not hard to see why this sit-down chippy is no stranger to award-winning. They consider themselves a spot where people arrive as customers and leave as friends, and that (and their outrageously delicious food) is what has helped them bag a spot on FRY’s list of the 10 best fish and chip restaurants in the country.
The Anchor, Bexley
A fairly recent addition to London’s chippy sceneThe Anchor in Bexley has become hugely popular on social media since opening in 2022. They offer all of the classics you’d expect to see on a fish and chip menu, but have really piqued the capital’s interest with the hefty platters that they serve up. The ‘Instagram Platter’ includes a mountain of chips, two huge pieces of cod, two battered sausages, crispy prawns, mac and cheese bites, halloumi fries, spring rolls, mushy peas, and curry sauce. Now that’s what we call the perfect chippy order. The Anchor was named as one of FRY’s top 50 fish and chip takeaways.

You know what? Considering that there are around 10,500 fish and chip shops in the UK, we’re feeling pretty darn proud of the fact that two of ours made the cut. Oh, and if one award wasn’t enough. Both Toff’s and The Anchor have made it to the final of the National Fish & Chip Awards’. Winners for these awards will be announced in February, and we have our fin-gers well-and-truly crossed for them both.
