A festive trip is a surefire way to swat away the seasonal blues – and what better place to turn to for winter travel inspiration than the go-to place for public opinion? That’s right: online review site TripAdvisor has released its final Seasonal Travel Index for 2023.
They analysed some data, predominantly from their consumer survey and behavioural stats from the website, and have compiled a list of the destinations that will be most popular this winter.
With its Christmas markets and pretty streets, it’s no surprise that everyone’s favourite weekend city break destination Amsterdam came in at number one.
In second place, the Mexican resort city of Cancun looks set to be the go-to place for winter sun – with its sandy beaches and margaritas, it does make sense. In fact, Mexico, closely followed by Türkiye, is the most in-demand destination for Christmas getaways for 2023, and two other Quintana Roo resorts, Tulum and Playa del Carmen, also make the top ten.
Rovaniemi in Finland, the ‘official home of Santa Claus’, ranks at number three. When it comes to a winter holiday, there’s not really anywhere more festive. But while Christmas travel is popular, it’ll come as no surprise that January is actually set to be the most affordable time to go – it might be worth delaying your break until the new year.
Here are the ten trending destinations to visit this winter, according to TripAdvisor
- Amsterdam, Netherlands
- Cancun, Mexico
- Rovaniemi, Lapland
- Playa del Carmen, Mexico
- Punta Cana, Dominican Republic
- Istanbul, Türkiye
- Paris, France
- Paphos, Cyprus
- Tulum, Mexico
- Antalya, Türkiye
