If you’re tired of Netflix in your home country (or are missing certain shows or movies), there is a way to make Netflix think you’re in a different region than where you actually are.
Officially you can only change your region on Netflix if you move, but you can of course sneak around this by using a VPN.
The content available on Netflix varies by region, so for example what is offered on Netflix US differs from what is offered on Netflix in the Netherlands.
By using a vpn, you trick Netflix into thinking you are in another country and access that country’s content. A VPN is a Virtual private network that routes your internet activity through the VPN’s own servers, so your IP address will be in the country of your choice.
How to change your region:
1. Make sure you have an active Netflix account.
2. Choose between a paid VPN and a free version.
Both do the job, but paid VPNs are usually faster and available in more locations. Free VPNs often don’t ask you to sign up for them so they can help you maintain anonymity, but they can also sell your data and be bundled with spyware. So do your research before you just install the first free VPN you find.
3. Subscribe to a VPN service and download it to your Mac or PC.
4. You can also use a VPN on your phone/tablet.
5. Open your VPN and choose a region.
We will show you how to do this using PIA as an example.
On iOS it’s self-explanatory. Open the VPN and select either “VPN Server” and choose from the VPN servers offered or choose from the “Quick Connect” options.
To connect to a VPN server on OSX, select the status menu icon in the shape of a lock. When you click on the lock-shaped menu icon, there will be a pull-down menu where you can search and select the country you want.

A green dot will appear next to the lock when you are connected to the VPN.
6. Open Netflix and choose what you want to watch from the new selection of films and series.
Now you can enjoy Netflix’s content all over the world.
Often Netflix will try to block VPNs by banning the IP address in question, so you may run into some problems. PIA, for example, has specific servers labeled “Streaming”, so you might want to try those out first. Other VPNs work much the same.
