On the lengthy list of things we Londoners love the most; relaxing at a spa and reveling in a bargain are two things you’ll find pretty close to the top. And so the news of one of London’s oldest and most affordable spas reopening to the public this week has come as quite the delight.
Tucked inside Bethnal Green‘s historic York Hall is one of the last remaining traditional Turkish baths in London. The spa at York Hall is one of two of the oldest spas in the capitalhaving opened in the very same year as Porchester Spa (which just so happens to have also undergone a transformation and recently reopened).
Having been officially opened in 1929 by none other than King George VI and Queen Elizabeththe spacious spa is – quite literally – fit for a king. And since it’s been loosening the shoulders of Londoners for almost 100 years; it was about time that it was given some well-deserved TLC. The spa at York Hall has recently undergone a hefty renovation, courtesy of Tower Hamlets Councilwhich has transformed London’s oldest spa into a modern sanctuary of relaxation.
Now, fear not. The iconic Grade II listed building in which the spa is perched is known for its Victorian architecture and Art Deco interior. The recent revamp of the spa has carefully maintained plenty of the original features, including the intricate tile work – meaning that the spa now offers visitors a seamless blend of historic charm and modern luxury. Sounds pretty dreamy, right?
The new and improved facilities will offer a thermal spa experiencefeaturing two aroma steam rooms, a state-of-the-art infrared sauna, a traditional sauna, a monsoon shower, a plunge pool, an ice fountain, a hammam, and a relaxation lounge. And the very best part? It’s an absolute bargain. The spa at York Hall is one of the only spas in the country where no private companies profit from its services. It is run directly by the council, which allows the spa to offer some pretty darn decent prices, in keeping with the council’s aim to enhance health and wellbeing in the local community.
Two hours thermal spa access is just £32.50and treatments start from as little as 3O. An utter steal in the world of London spas, really. Treatments on offer include the likes of a stress-relief massage, a full body scrub, a mineral mud cocoon, and a variety of Elemis facials. So, if you need me, folks – I think you know where I’ll be…
