exterior of ravens ait, remote island on thames

Tucked away on a tranquil stretch of the River Thamesthere is a remote island that feels world apart from that the hustle and bustle of London. This private island, accessible only by a charming ferry ride, offers visitors a rare escape: there are no roads, just lush gardens, sweeping river views, and a sense of timelessness that makes every visit feel like stepping into another era.

The island is situated in the River Thames between Surbiton, Kingston, and Hampton Court Parkwithin the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames.

Nestled on the non-tidal stretch of the river above Teddington Lock and just below Seething Wells, Raven’s Ait is accessible only by a private ferry from Queen’s Promenade on the south bank.

Covering approximately two acres, Raven’s Ait boasts beautifully landscaped lawns, a riverside veranda, and sweeping views across the Thamesincluding vistas of the Hampton Court Palace grounds. The southern tip features a large manicured lawn shaded by a majestic weeping willow, while a permanent marquee offers space for up to 320 guests for banquets or celebrations.

It’s no ordinary venue – Raven’s Ait has a rich history. It was once considered a possible site for the signing of documents related to the Magna Carta in 1215. In the 20th century, it served as a boating and sailing training centre for the Sea Cadet Corps and the Girls’ Nautical Training Corps, with facilities rebuilt in the 1970s to accommodate modern needs. The island has also hosted regattas, youth training programs, and community events, reflecting its longstanding connection to river life and education.

Recently, Raven’s Ait has earned a reputation as an exclusive venue for weddings, parties, and corporate events. Its bright, spacious reception areas and curated dining experiences provide a luxurious backdrop for any occasion. So if you’re planning a wedding – the island’s privacy and exclusivity make it a favourite for those seeking a memorable, intimate celebration.

So whether you’re seeking a venue for a special occasion or simply want to experience a slice of riverside tranquility, this remote island promises it all.
