Just a short journey from the bustle of London lies a hidden festive gem that transforms the season into an unforgettable family-friendly adventure.

Away from the city’s usual Christmas markets and lightsthis enchanting destination nestled deep in the scenic Chiltern Hills brings a unique twist to holiday celebrations. It’s a perfect escape for Londoners looking to make the most of the festive season away from capital and into something entirely different this year.

As winter drapes the Chiltern Hills in a sparkling chill, West Wycombe’s legendary Hellfire Caves transforms into a haven of festive wonder. This year, from November 23 until December 24families are invited to discover the most enchanting underground Christmas experience set alongside quirky festivities in the picturesque Walled Garden next door.​

Santa’s Grotto experience in the Hellfire Caves

Far more than a classic Santa’s Grottothe Hellfire Caves offer an immersive journey through mysterious tunnels, twinkling lights, and elaborately decorated caverns. Led by playful elves, families are guided deep beneath the Chilterns, where the legend of Father Christmas comes alive thanks to atmospheric storytelling (and perhaps a sprinkle of Grinchy mischief along the way). Each child enjoys a personal visit with Father Christmas, a gift, and souvenir photo booth moments making for an unforgettable treat for all ages.​

Dates and times: Santa’s Grotto runs November 23, 29-30 and 6-7, 13-14, 20-23 December 13-14, 20-23 (9am-5pm); late afternoon sessions December 8-12 & 15-19 (3:30pm-7:30pm); and a special morning session on Christmas Eve (9am-1pm).

Tickets: Adults £10; Children £20-£24.50 (including a present from Father Christmas). Pre-booking is recommended given limited slots.

Christmas carols and market at The Walled Garden

Just steps away from the caves, the Walled Garden offers an alternative slice of festive tradition which completely free to enjoy. On November 29, gather for a cosy afternoon of Christmas Carols among the twinkling trees (2pm-4pm). The next day, November 30, the space transforms into a bustling Christmas Market filled with artisan gift stalls, decorative treasures, and the irresistible aroma of holiday treats.​
