christmas market set against bath abbey

While London boasts some of the most magical Christmas markets like Covent Garden and the South Bank – the sheer crowds and urban chaos can sometimes dim the festive charm. So it’s no surprise that families look elsewhere to enjoy the festive period.

This Christmas market stands out as one of the best places to enjoy the festive season, celebrated not only for its scale but also its enchanting location in a UNESCO World Heritage city.

Voted the best Christmas market in the UK in 2025

From Thursday, November 27 to Sunday, December 14, visitors can immerse themselves in a winter wonderland spread across the Bath’s historic cobbled streets making it a magical and romantic experience just a short train ride from London.

Bath Christmas market features over 230 wooden chalets brimming with handcrafted gifts, artisanal crafts, bespoke jewellery, festive decorations, and gourmet food and drink that highlight local producers.

This extensive range offers wonderful Christmas shopping opportunities alongside the enticing smell of mulled wine and roasted chestnuts. Live music, carol singers, and street performers further enrich the joyful atmosphere, while elegant light displays illuminate Bath’s iconic Georgian architecture, adding to the festive spirit.

Bath Christmas market’s picturesque setting with landmarks such as Bath Abbey and the Roman Baths

Beyond shopping, Bath Christmas market offers a variety of attractions and activities for all ages. The famous Bath on Ice rink returns in Royal Victoria Park, covering 1000 square meters of ice for skating under twinkling lights, alongside glow-in-the-dark mini-golf and a cozy alpine bar serving seasonal treats.

Family-friendly events include festive workshops such as wreath-making and Christmas biscuit decorating, pantomimes like “The Further Adventures of Peter Pan” at the Theatre Royal Bath, and opportunities to meet Father Christmas in special grottos at museums and heritage sites.

Visitors can also explore the city’s other holiday celebrations including the Widcombe Christmas Market and light trails at Westonbirt Arboretum nearby.

The market’s location provides a picturesque setting with stunning landmarks including Bath Abbey and the Roman Bathscreating a uniquely atmospheric backdrop to the festivities. The event draws hundreds of thousands of visitors each year, generating significant economic benefits for local businesses while supporting artisans and traders from the South West region.

Its accessibility from London (about 1.5 hours by train) makes it an ideal day trip or weekend getaway.
