A glowing Christmas tree between the pillars at Hampton Court Palace at dusk

I come bearing yet another event to add to your ever-lengthening list of Christmassy goings-onfolks. And this one comes in the form of a historic royal palace that’ll soon be throwing open its (rather fancy) doors and inviting Londoners and beyond to step inside to eat, drink, and be oh-so merry this festive season.

The halls of Hampton Court Palace have been well-and-truly decked with tinsel, twinkly lights, and traditional decorations. And the historic hotspot is now mere moments from coming alive for a season of magic and merriment.

Christmas at Hampton Court Palace

The former residence of Henry VII has gone for the more-is-more approach to the festivities. But did we really expect anything less? From historic cookery and live music to an enchanting ice rink and a festive fayre; there truly is something to even make the Grinchiest of Grinches crack a seasonal smile.

The crackling fire in the palace’s kitchen will offer a cosy escape from the chilly outdoors. Guests will be able to discover the culinary traditions of Christmases long ago, as between December 20 and January 4, the Historic Kitchens team will be whipping up dishes from the Tudor Court, offering visitors a peek into the colossal Christmas feasts from years gone by. The sweet sounds of live music will be filling the palace’s hallowed halls throughout the season. And down in the wine cellar, hosts will be bringing the history of Christmas to life.

The glorious grounds of the palace will be equally as jam-packed with Christmas cheer. From December 17 to January 4, the magic garden will be opening its gates for the occasion, offering a space for some playful outdoor adventures. And from November 21 to January 4, the palace’s enchanting ice rink will be open, complete with the likes of live ice sculpting displays, a seasonal art exhibition, DJ sets, and – of course – a skating Santa.

The ‘Festive Fayre’ will be taking place in the Great Fountain Garden on selected weekends in December. There will be over 100 independent exhibitors on hand, selling delicious food and drinks as well as a plethora of unique Christmas gifts. And if all that wasn’t enough, Hampton Court Palace are also offering magical horse and cart rides around the grounds. What more could you want, hey?

With over 500 years of history to explore and a whole host of Christmassy happenings to get stuck into; there’s every reason to add Hampton Court Palace to the top of your must-visit list this festive season.
