This time it’ll be Milanese
After opening Roman-style spot Lupa in Highbury last year, actor Theo James, Carousel co-founder Ed Templeton and chef Naz Hassan are already onto site number two. Ornella, opening on Wilton Way (on the site that was previously home to Fran’s and just a few doors down from Sally Abé’s new spot Teal), will be taking inspo from Milan, the city where Naz was raised.
The menu will showcase the flavours of northern Italy, meaning dishes like:
- Mondeghili meatballs
- penne with vodka
- tagliatelle with butter and Parmesan
- saffron risotto
- veal with tuna sauce
- veal cutlet
- strawberry thousand leaves
- sponge cake and custard
As well as focusing on a different region of Italy, Ornella will also be significantly bigger than Lupa, with 48 covers inside plus more room on the street for al fresco dining.
Speaking about Ornella, co-founder Ed Templeton said; “We’d always spoken about doing another one one day but I don’t think we ever imagined we’d be opening a second restaurant just nine months later. When we were discussing the concept, we knew immediately that we had to give Naz the chance to cook the food of his home city. He’s exceptionally talented, as is his sous chef Sandro. We can’t wait to see how they channel their talent into another iconic city with another very strong culinary identity. We’re super excited to become part of another very special neighbourhood”.
With Tiella, Osteria Vibrato and Burro all opening in recent weeks, it seems Italian food is enjoying a real moment, and no doubt Ornella is going to fit right in.
