The Rock Inn: Where 3 Flavours Meet Somerset’s Countryside
There’s something rather magical about escaping the hustle and bustle of the city during autumn, especially when the countryside of Somerset and Devon beckons with its seasonal charm. The vibrant hues of golden leaves and the soft mist curling over quiet country lanes create a landscape that feels almost otherworldly. Nestled within this idyllic setting is The Rock Inn, a charming 450-year-old pub in the picturesque village of Waterrow, just a stone’s throw from the serene River Tone, Exmoor and the rolling hills of North Devon. Here, amidst the historic beauty and tranquil surroundings, the warmth of tradition meets the quiet luxury of country living.

I had the pleasure of staying in one of The Rock Inn’s eight newly opened rooms, designed to blend the rustic charm of a traditional country inn with the modern flair of the 3 Flavours Kitchen concept, overseen by the acclaimed Sri Lankan chef, Chanaka Fernando. This unique culinary offering brings a vibrant twist to the classic pub experience, merging the best of local ingredients with bold, exotic flavours. Inside, the pub retains its historic character, with oak-beamed low ceilings, a central bar, thick stone walls, and an inviting wood-burning stove set in an attractive stone fireplace adding to the homely feel and on the walls, photographic prints of leopards adding a touch of Sri Lanka.

While the garden terrace was perhaps not quite in season for al fresco dining during my visit, I can only imagine how glorious it must be come summer, offering a perfect spot to enjoy a leisurely meal under the sun.

Run by the warm and welcoming Sri Lankan couple, Danu and Chamila, The Rock Inn’s newly renovated rooms offer a cosy, personal touch that makes you feel right at home. Styled in a charming country fashion, each room is thoughtfully furnished with comfortable beds, flat-screen TVs, Wi-Fi, tea-making facilities, modern bathrooms, bathrobes and bath products, creating the perfect balance of rustic character and contemporary comfort. Some rooms are equipped to accommodate families.

Danu and Chamila are passionate about integrating with the local community, which is evident in their commitment to supporting local producers and creating excellent dining experiences. During our stay, it became apparent that The Rock Inn holds a special place at the heart of the village. Since its recent reopening under their ownership, the inn has quickly transformed into a lively hub, radiating a sense of connection and warmth far beyond its welcoming walls. Several locals we chatted with were delighted with the pub’s new direction, praising the owners’ enthusiasm and unwavering focus on quality food. The pub was abuzz with activity on both nights we spent there, a vibrant mix of locals and visitors enjoying the superb food and convivial atmosphere.

During my visit, I had the pleasure of meeting Chef Chanaka Fernando, who spoke passionately about 3 Flavours Kitchen, the latest venture in his culinary journey. Originally from Sri Lanka, Chef Chanaka began his culinary career at 15, trained at Colombo’s hotel school, and moved to London at 19, honing his craft under renowned chefs like Gordon Ramsay and Marcus Wareing. As the former Executive Chef at Buddha Bar London, he earned acclaim for his innovative, globally inspired cuisine. Now, alongside his business partner Chamila Chathura Kumarapperumage, he is bringing the celebrated 3 Flavours brand -renowned for its commitment to fresh, seasonal ingredients and strong ties to local suppliers, to the Southwest for the first time.

Their vision is clear: to blend exceptional culinary artistry with the rustic charm of Waterrow, creating a dining experience that feels both elevated and deeply rooted in its surroundings. Already established with thriving neighbourhood eateries in Barnet and Banbury, the launch of 3 Flavours Kitchen at The Rock Inn marks an exciting milestone for the brand, with many more ventures planned. Hearing Chef Chanaka’s enthusiasm first hand made it evident that this is a labour of love as much as it is a business endeavour, and the results look good.

During our stay, we enjoyed dinner and breakfast on both nights, with the menu offering a thoughtfully curated mix of British classics and international dishes. Options included Cumberland sausages with mash, steaks, burgers, pasta, and more global fare like roasted sea bass with beluga lentils, seafood risotto, and various curries. The daily specials board added an extra layer of intrigue.

On the first evening, we eased into the meal with a plate of Padron peppers, their natural smokiness elevated by a subtle miso glaze and a scattering of sesame seeds that added a pleasant depth of flavour. Alongside these, chicken and cabbage dumplings were delicately crafted, their soft parcels delivering a thoroughly satisfying start.
For the main event, we followed a recommendation and went for the special of the day: slow-cooked ox cheeks. Tender to the point of indulgence, they came paired with creamy horseradish mash, caramelised carrots, and a chilli-rosemary jus. Perfect winter fare – hearty, deeply flavoured, and generously portioned. It left little room for dessert, though the sweet menu was hard to resist.

The following evening, it was the curries that stole the show. The chilli garlic prawns, prepared Ceylon style, were vibrant and full of spice, perfectly complemented by a fragrant chicken green Thai curry. Served with steamed rice and crispy shallots, the dishes showcased a balance and depth of flavour rarely found in pub dining. Having spent time in Sri Lanka, I have a soft spot for a well-executed curry, and these did not disappoint -the kind of plates that prove a kitchen’s commitment to authenticity and detail.

The pub serves a range of classic drinks, including wines, beers, and soft options, catering comfortably to traditional tastes. As someone who values a well-curated wine to accompany a meal, I found the wine list during our visit somewhat limited. However, we were assured that an updated selection is on the way – a promising development for future visits.

After a restful night’s sleep, few things are as satisfying as a hearty breakfast to prepare you for a day of countryside adventures. The breakfast menu ticks all the boxes, offering a classic full English, eggs Benedict, avocado on toast, and an array of vegetarian options. For those inclined toward a sweeter start, the pancake selection is fabulous.

It’s still early days for the new owners of The Rock Inn and the 3-Flavours brand, but they have all the ingredients for success: quality food, comfortable lodgings, and a picturesque setting. If the positive reception from the locals is any indication, visitors are likely to feel the same. By spring and summer, this place has the potential to be truly idyllic.
