Coca-Cola is introducing a brand new flavor for the first time in three years. The global drinks giant is launching Coca-Cola Spiced in hopes of attracting younger customers who like fruit-inspired drinks from smaller brands.

The 137-year-old carbonated company has felt the heat from competitors who have quickly adapted to changing tastes. So they’ve decided to spice things up with their first new permanent offering in three years, Coca-Cola Spiced and Coca-Cola Spiced Zero Sugar. These will be available in the US and Canada starting February 19, following the 2022 launch of Coca-Cola Creations, a series of eight limited-edition flavors.

Coca-Cola is adding a new twist to its classic drink with the introduction of Coca-Cola Happy Tears and Coca-Cola Spiced. The company has experimented with different flavors like coconut, strawberry, watermelon and now salt and minerals for Happy Tears, which will be sold exclusively on TikTok in the US and UK starting February 17.

Shakir Moin, head of marketing for Coca-Cola in North America, shared with the Associated Press: “If you go to the aisles, you’ll see that the amount of spiciness has increased as consumers’ taste palettes have evolved. We realized that could be an opportunity for us. Can we dial up something that’s already part of our formula and bring in a flavor profile that’s interesting, unique and brings in the next generation of consumers?”

Moin also said that their work with Coca-Cola Creations helped them make Coca-Cola Spiced. They made this new drink super fast, in just seven weeks. He believes being fast is key, saying, “Consumers are moving faster. The market is moving faster. We have to be faster than the speed of the market.”

In 2022, Coke, Coca-Cola Zero Sugar and Diet Coke had only a small sales increase of one percent in North America. That’s less than the three percent sales increase for carbonated water and juice. Elsewhere, more people bought water, tea, sports drinks and coffee than regular Coke.

Coca-Cola has decided to add new permanent flavors to its range, with Spiced joining popular Cherry and Vanilla. Sue Lynne Cha, Coke’s vice president of marketing for North America, explained to CNN that Spiced was chosen because it aligns with current trends and consumer preferences.
