Evening Picture of the Thames Separating City of London and Tower Hamlets from Southwark, with Tower Bridge at a Distance

Now I could be very wrong about this. But as far as I’m aware, people don’t tend to move to London in pursuit of peace and quiet. Hustle and bustle? Of course. Pie and mash? Absolutely. But the capital city just doesn’t exactly scream ‘noiseless’, does it?

If you are on the lookout for the quietest borough in townhowever (each to their own, and all that), then you happen to have come to the right place. Because peaceful London boroughs apparently do exist – and we’re about to point you in their direction.

The property-pros over at Barratt Homes did some research to uncover which of London’s 32 boroughs are the quietest. And topping the list is quite a surprising one, in my opinion. Home to the likes of Spitalfields, the Tower of London, and Canary Wharf; the London Borough of Tower Hamlets nabbed the crown for being the least noisy borough of all. Who’d have thought it?

With an average noise level of around 53.3 decibels, the volume in Tower Hamlets supposedly resembles that of a normal conversation. Suton came in at a very close second place with an average noise level 53.8 decibels, and Waltham Forest took the third spot with an average noise level of 56.1 decibels. On the other end of the spectrum, the loudest borough in town is Islington. The noisy neighbourhood had an average noise level of 77.2 decibels – resembling the volume of a dishwasher, a factory floor, or a freight train). You really do learn something new everyday, hey?

The quietest boroughs in London

  1. Tower Hamlets
  2. Suton
  3. Waltham Forest
  4. Croydon
  5. Ealing

You can (oh-so quietly) read Barratt’s full findings here.
