The show, originally aired on BBC One, first aired in 1981 and lasted seven series with a final episode airing on Christmas Day in 2003.

Sir David appeared as Del Boy alongside Nicholas Lyndhurst as Rodney Trotter and the late Buster Merryfield as Uncle Albert who passed away in 1999.

Only Fools and Horses attracted millions of viewers, has often been described as one of the best British TV shows, and has even inspired a stage musical based on the characters.

But despite the nation’s love for comedy, Sir David recently shared that one joke featured in Only Fools and Horses would never be aired now.

Sir David Jason admits the one Only Fools and Horses joke that would not be aired now

Writing in his recent autobiography, This Time Next Year, Sir David shares: “You are quite hard-pressed to find a joke in Only Fools and Horses that feels date-stamped.

“I’ve given this some thought and there’s just one laugh line that I’ve managed to isolate which could currently be felt to be sitting uncomfortably below time’s unsparing axe.”

The joke Sir David discusses was featured in the 1989 Christmas special, The Jolly Boys Outing, reports the Express.

The festive special saw Del Boy play Trivial Pursuit with Cassandra’s boss, Stephen, who asked about the name of a female swan.

Del Boy is unsure of the answer and prompts Rodney to give him a hint, which he gives in the form of tapping a pen.

Reacting to the hint, Del Boy shouts: “Got it! It’s a Bic.”

However, Sir David now thinks that joke would be missed with current audiences, sharing: “Never mind the word ‘pl***er’: for how much longer will the word ‘Bic’ automatically mean ’pen’ for younger generations, who may actually be struggling to recognise the word ‘pen’ not too far from now.

“So, this time next year…well, maybe nobody’s finding that funny.”
