The Oscar-winning star, whose career spanned seven decades, passed away peacefully at his home.

He was best known for his powerful performances in classics such as The Godfather, To Kill a Mockingbird, and M*A*S*H.

His wife Luciana announced his death in a statement today (February 16) on Facebook.

Robert Duvall dies aged 95, his wife confirms

She said: “Yesterday we said goodbye to my beloved husband, cherished friend, and one of the greatest actors of our time.

“Bob passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by love and comfort.

“To the world, he was an Academy Award-winning actor, a director, a storyteller. To me, he was simply everything.

“His passion for his craft was matched only by his deep love for characters, a great meal, and holding court.

“For each of his many roles, Bob gave everything to his characters and to the truth of the human spirit they represented.

“In doing so, he leaves something lasting and unforgettable to us all.

“Thank you for the years of support you showed Bob and for giving us this time and privacy to celebrate the memories he leaves behind.”

Duvall was born in San Diego, California, in 1931, and his parents were an amateur actress and a US Navy rear admiral, reports the Metro.

He described himself as a “Navy brat” and grew up mainly in Annapolis, Maryland.

Despite his father’s hopes that he would attend the US Naval Academy, Duvall admitted he was “terrible at everything but acting.”

He went on to earn a degree in drama from Principia College in Elsah, Illinois, before serving a year in the US Army from 1953.

He later studied at the Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre in New York City.
