The creative curational duo behind Gallery No.32 have recently announced the return of London’s largest sculpture park. Back for its fourth year, the free-to-visit Winter Sculpture Garden will this time be taking over a disused golf course in south-east London; giving visitors the chance to explore the experimental contemporary art in a gorgeous outdoor setting.
Having been closed to the public for over a decade, Thamesmead golf course will provide the picture-perfect setting for art-lovers to wander and roam, whilst discovering the incredible artworks that will be scattered throughout the 6.5 acres of grassland, stretching along the banks of the River Thames.
The Winter Sculpture Park will display 40 works of art, created by 34 different artists across a range of mediums. Artworks being presented include Life Raft by Ellie Harrison (a climate change-inspired work that was previously exhibited in Venice), Prayer Room by Ishmail De Niro, Dinosaur Kilby and Leah Hickey (a collaborative piece that functions as a multi-faith prayer space), Joseph Ijoyemi’s work tackling questions of identity, heritage, and cultural memory, and Alegria Repila Smith’s moving memorial to women who have become victims of male violence.
Seamlessly combining art, nature, and the people of London; the Winter Sculpture Garden has been curated by Meg Stuart and Kieran Idle – the brains behind independent public art project, Gallery No.32.
Kieran said: “We’re excited about placing the sculptures in a considered, low-impact way so that people can enjoy the art and nature at the same time. We also like that passers-by will be able to see the sculptures from the Thames Path. So in addition to people visiting Winter Sculpture Park, we’ll also have people who chance upon the artworks as they walk along the pathway.”
Meg said: “It’s public art and it’s free to visit throughout. We want people to wander, explore and discover these new cultural monuments along the Thames.”
Winter Sculpture Park will launch on Saturday March 1 with a full day of performances, workshops, and music. It will then run at Thamesview Golf Centre from March 2 – April 26. Find out more and plan your visit here.
