Game Science, the developer behind the blockbuster hit Black Myth: Wukong has been embroiled in controversy thanks to a leaked document.
Black Myth: Wukonga new action role-playing game, is shaping up to be one of the biggest games of the year. It has an “overwhelmingly positive” Steam rating of over 180,000 reviews. Players really can’t seem to get enough of the single player game.
But things have gone a bit wrong Black Myth: Wukongas those who fasten enough have observed.
What is controversial about the black myth: Wukong?
Black Myth: Wukong was available for purchase on August 20. And naturally, as with every other popular new video game under the sun, streamers have wanted to put their fingers to the keyboard and send themselves playing it.
After all, the game has already proven to be quite popular, which would certainly bring great success and more recognition to the Game Science developer.
But there is trouble in Game Science paradise. The studio sent out a list of instructions for players who want to stream Black Myth: Wukong (via Sports Illustrated). And these guidelines have proven to be quite controversial.
The “Don’ts” section of Black Myth Wukong streamers has a list of rules that many have found restrictive at best and incredibly offensive at worst.
According to Game Science, streamers should not mention topics such as politics, violence, “feminist propaganda” and anything else that could spark “negative discussion.” Game Science has also specifically requested that players not utter terms such as “quarantine” or “COVID-19”.
Under the “Tasks” column is simply the phrase “Enjoy the game!”
Forbes’ Paul Tassi contacted the US streamer and confirmed that they did in fact receive this instructional email from Game Science, apparently confirming its authenticity.
It’s clear that Game Science’s values have rubbed players the wrong way. And this wouldn’t even be the first time a Chinese game developer has faced backlash.
In 2023, IGN published a lengthy exposé detailing Game Science’s claims of sexism after several people working with the studio posted posts online that could be considered quite inflammatory and misogynistic.
Game Science has remained silent throughout this controversy Black Myth: Wukong and has not yet acknowledged any complaint and concern against them.
Black Myth: Wukong is now available for PlayStation and PC.
