Although it may not feel like it outside, we are well on our way to winter, with clocks going back a sign that shorter days and colder nights are on the way. So it really is time to trade a day at the sea for a cozy winter stay – summer is overrated anyway, isn’t it?
Of course, you’ll not only want to think about the best place to stay, but also how to get there. Luckily for those looking to get away this winter, the city which has been voted the best winter accommodation in the UK is just over 30 minutes away by train.
That town is Windsor, along with Maidenhead, according to insurance company Comparethemarket, which said families love Windsor “because there is so much to do with children”. Family-friendly activities in the borough include a trip to Legoland, Windsor and the Royal Borough Museum, and of course Windsor Castle.
What makes Windsor so great in winter?
Windsor Castle is undoubtedly one of the city’s most famous tourist attractions, with Her Late Majesty having spent so much time there before her passing. Every year, thousands of tourists flock to the Berkshire town to get a real sense of what life is like for the royal family.
Windsor is by no means the only attraction in the area, which is also known for its beautiful green spaces. You can take a scenic walk to Virginia Water, Savill Garden or Windsor Great Park, which is part of the Crown Estate. The extensive park dates back to pre-Saxon times and has been a favorite spot for the royal family for years, BerkshireLive reported. Other local attractions include the Theater Royal which hosts Christmas pantomimes every year.
The best winter overnight stays in the UK according to Compare the Market:
1. Windsor and Maidenhead
2. Cornwall
4. London
5. Oxford
6. Brighton and Hove
7. Stirling
8. Hastings
9. Winchester
10. Warwick/Cambridge
Commenting on the research, Anna McEntee, director at Comparethemarket, said: “If you’re planning a winter break this year, it’s important to check you have the right travel insurance in place. This will help keep you and your family covered in the event of unforeseen circumstances such as losing your items or having them stolen to give you security when you are away from home”.
