Best Overall
Marshalltown Avalanche! AVA500 Snow Rake
Pros
- Tough build quality
- Wide rake head
Cons
- Limited reach and slide length
With its sturdy construction and smart design, this snow roof rake is simply the best way to clear snow from your roof. There are four fiberglass handle sections that snap together for quick assembly. Also, its 1.5-inch wheels keep the slide low enough to slip its 17-inch wide vinyl strip under the snow with plenty of clearance to avoid rubbing against the ridges on asphalt shingles. (For tile or cedar shingles, there’s a version to consider.)
While the AVA500 is heavier than some, the added weight keeps the rake head from riding up on top of the snow as you push it up the roof. The rake head itself is broad, but it’s limited to a 15.5-foot reach and 12-foot slide, which can make it challenging to use on higher roofs.

Best Value
Snow Joe Roof Rake Snow Removal Tool
Pros
- Long reach and extended slide length
- Lightweight design
Cons
- Cheaper build quality
Snow Joe offers an affordable alternative to some of the more expensive rakes out there. It has excellent reach with five pole sections that extend its length from 14 to 28 feet. While its 15-inch width is narrower than some, its 20-foot slide length is significantly longer than pricier snow rakes I’ve seen.
The combination of longer handle and longer slide makes this rake suitable for taller roof lines. At just 6.2 pounds, it’s rather easy to lift and maneuver, but this light weight also leads to occasional riding up on harder snow. The Snow Joe roof rake is half the price of similarly designed rakes, but with that, you get a less than stellar build quality for potentially diminished durability.

Best Lightweight
Marshalltown Avalanche! Snow Roof Rake
Pros
- Long, 20-foot reach
- Lightweight design
Cons
- Head can bend under heavy pressure
With a head that is 24-inches wide and 8-inches deep, the Avalanche! Snow Roof Rake can remove exceedingly large amounts of snow with each pass. And since it has a 20-foot reach, it clears higher single-story roofs than many of its predecessors.
The rake’s head is made from heavy-duty plastic and supported by two wheels that help it to roll over shingles and even solar panels without damaging them. The entire rake weighs just six pounds, which makes it rather easy to wield. However, under heavy pressure, the head may start to bend, so you’ll need to use it carefully when the snow really starts to accumulate.

Best Telescoping
True Temper Telescoping Snow Roof Rake
Pros
- Easy-to-operate telescoping mechanism
- Sturdy aluminum frame
- Won’t damage roof
Cons
- A bit heavy
Add or remove length from this True Temper snow roof rake easily thanks to the well-designed telescoping mechanism on its handle. While other telescoping rakes use a twist lock to shorten and extend the handle, True Temper uses a push button that’s much easier to operate with gloved hands.
The rake extends to a maximum of 17 feet—not the longest on this list, but still a good length for clearing most first story homes. With an aluminum handle and a poly plastic rake head that’s reinforced with aluminum supports, it’s tough enough to cut through snow without warping, and leaves your shingles unscathed. Though not the lightest of snow roof rakes, the True Temper is still manageable at 6.8 pounds.

Most Durable
Extreme Max Shingle-Saver Snow Roof Rake
Pros
- Durable metal construction
- Light overall weight
- Large head for max snow removal
Cons
- Can be difficult to pull large head
The Extreme Max is one durable roof rake. Both the shaft and head are made from aluminum, so it won’t warp or bend even when using it to remove harder, heavier snow from your rooftop. The curved blade measures two-feet wide and seven-inches deep and can handle large amounts of snow with each pull (as long as you have the strength to pull it).
Small rollers on the bottom of the head protect your roof from damage as the rake rolls across it. The handle consists of four sections that snap together, so you can adjust its length all the way up to 21 feet. Despite its long reach, the Extreme Max’s all-aluminum construction helps it weigh less than six pounds.

Best Heavy Duty
SnowPeeler Classic Roof Rake
Pros
- Long telescoping handle
- Heavy-duty aluminum construction
Cons
- Heavy overall weight
If you need to remove harder, heavier snow from a larger roof, and you don’t mind some extra weight and a slightly steeper price, then the Snow Peeler is a great way to go.
It features a durable aluminum head with reinforced supports, making it tough enough to pull through snow that has melted and refrozen. Its handle can reach up to 30 feet and features a telescoping design, so you don’t need to mess with connecting and removing individual sections to change the length.
Just keep in mind that this heavy-duty snow rake requires more effort to use as it weighs a whopping 13.4 pounds. And since it has a narrower and shorter slide than other snow roof rakes, you’ll need to work longer to clear a roof with it.
