The Man of Steel is back! Again. No, not Henry Cavill, despite being reintroduced before being swiftly axed from the slate again. DC’s Superman: Legacy will reboot the nicest superhero in town with a look back at Clark Kent’s background.
The new film was initially announced at DC’s press conference at the start of the year to unveil their slate of intertwining superhero films and TV shows, perhaps the most exciting development related to Superman.
While it’s very early stages with the film still a while away, it’s recently started filling out its cast, meaning we know who is about to be the next generation’s Superman and who is going to be his villain. Here’s everything we know about Superman: Legacy.
Who will star in Superman: Legacy?
After a grand return that lasted all of 2 months, Henry Cavill was booted from his role as the Man of Steel, leaving a big cape to fill. It was announced back in June that David Corenswet – who you might know as a Ryan Murphy alum in his Netflix shows Hollywood and The Politician – would be donning the thick specs for the film, which will be about the early part of Superman’s life. In all honesty, one look at Corenswet and you’d be forgiven for believing he was created in some kind of Superman development lab.
During the process of finding the new Superman, however, a bunch of names were thrown out as unsuccessful successors – one of them being Nicholas Hoult. However, it’s now been announced that he will be a part of Superman: Legacy, just on the other side of the superhero line. He’ll be playing Lex Luther, Superman’s most notorious and follicly challenged nemesis. Let’s hope he’s got a good-shaped head under all that hair.
Elsewhere in the villain canon, Venezuelan actress María Gabriela de Faría has landed the role of Angela Spica aka The Engineer, a foe with nanotechnology coursing through her body. Also, unlikely Twitter meme king Skylar Gisondo, whose face seemed to flood timelines like a mid-level plague for a short time, has been cast as Jimmy Olsen, the boyish photographer who works alongside Clark Kent at The Daily Planet. This is great news for those of us still mourning the painful cancellation of Netflix’s Santa Clarita Diet.
Finally, after wrapping up five seasons of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Rachel Brosnahan will also come on board as Lois Lane, one of the most famous love interests in comic book lore.
Who will direct Superman: Legacy?
Gunn has revealed on Twitter that he is going to be helming this next era of Superman. Having wrapped the third Guardians of the Galaxy film before taking on his new role as head of DC Studios with Peter Safran, this is set to be his next foray into the world of the superpowered. He also has written the script, and Safran will produce it, making it a full DC heads family affair.
