The new Bakerloop bus service

London is officially set to welcome another new addition to its intricate transport network this weekend. And this particular piece of the patchwork will certainly come in handy for those who reside south of the river. That’s right, folks – the long-awaited Bakerloop bus service is launching this weekend, thus becoming the newest member of the Superloop bus family.

The service will be known as the BL1and will run along the exact same route as the proposed (but still unfortunately unconfirmed) Bakerloo Line extension. South Londoners have been long-yearning for a Bakerloo Line extensionplonking it at the very top of their wish-lists for many years now. And although this may not be exactly what they wished for, it’s most definitely a step bus ride in the right direction.

The Bakerloop bus route

The shiny new service will ferry passengers between Lewisham and Waterloo, via the likes of Elephant & Castle, Burgess Park, Old Kent Road, and New Cross Gate. These south London spots are infamously poorly connected, so I’m sure the new bus route will be welcomed with open arms. Earlier this year, the route was confirmed following the positive response from a public consultation. Receiving 1298 responses in totalthe consultation discovered that a rather hefty 82% of respondents would find the Bakerloop route a more convenient option than what’s currently on offer.

The Bakerloop (BL1) will join London’s 10 existing Superloop routes. These speedy services have already been whizzing Londoners around the city for a while now, connecting various transport hubs with minimal stops along the way.

The Bakerloop service will launch on Saturday (September 27) and will be giving passengers the chance to test-ride the shiny new route by offering a week of free pay as you go journeys on board the service. All aboard!
