About the Soho Place
Soho Place is the West End’s first new-build theatre in 50 years (after the Gillian Lynne Theatre opened in January 1973), located on the first newly-named street in Soho for 72 years. This state-of-the-art venue delivers an intimate and immersive actor/audience experience with dynamic seating and perfect acoustics. We visited the venue soon after it opened so we could show you just why it is the hottest new venue in the West End.
Part of property giant Derwent London’s £300 million regeneration project of the surrounding area, it is the latest theatre from leading West End producer and theatre owner Nica Burns. The interior is inspired by the open-air Greek Theatre of Epidaurus; audiences can look up and admire sparkling lights shaped into constellations as they walk through the building. There is also an on-site public restaurant and bar, making Soho Place Theatre a one-stop leisure destination.
Soho Place was designed by architect Simon Allford and Haworth Tompkins, with special attention paid to the curved auditorium, known as “the hug”. No seat is more than six rows from the stage, and seats can be moved into many different configurations such as in-the-round or thrust staging. It also boasts fantastic sightlines and vibration-free acoustics throughout – no mean feat for a venue sitting on top of three major tube lines.
Soho Place Theatre opened in September 2022 with an in-the-round production of Marvellous by Neil Baldwin.
