Cllr David Lancaster MBE

David Lancaster, a Salford councillor believed to have been the longest-serving councillor in England, has passed away.

First elected at just 21 years old, Cllr Lancaster went on to serve the city for six decades. Over the course of his 60-year career, he played a pivotal role in Salford’s regeneration, including the transformation of Salford Quays.

He was also credited with helping to secure £450m in investment for the area and supporting the BBC’s relocation to MediaCity.

Paying tribute on X, Salford City Council said: ‘We are extremely saddened to hear that Councillor David Lancaster MBE has passed away. He was a dedicated public servant of Salford whose contribution to the city spans an extraordinary 60 years. As a mark of respect our flag above the Civic Centre is flying at half-mast.’

Salford MP Rebecca Long-Bailey also commented: ‘His contribution to our city, from the Quays to neighbourhood policing initiatives, leaves a lasting legacy. My thoughts are with his family, friends and colleagues at this difficult time. Salford has lost a giant of local Government.’
