Location: Central London once per quarter, and virtual meetings.

Time commitment: The expected time commitment is 15 to 20 days per year.

Remuneration: Unremunerated; however travel and subsistence expenses will be reimbursed.

Do you want to play a key role in advising the government on a range of issues relating to the welfare of animals used in research?

If so, this is an exceptional opportunity to deliver reports and policy advice to ensure that government is best placed to maintain the highest standards in the welfare of animals used in research.

The Animals in Science Committee (ASC) is a non-departmental public body sponsored by the Home Office to provide independent advice to the government on the use of animals in scientific procedures and advise the Animal Welfare Ethical Review Bodies on good practice. The ASC also engages across government on cross-cutting issues such as the development and validation of alternative strategies.

We are seeking 5 new members with expertise:

  • in-vivo science
  • non-human primates
  • in-silico science and/or artificial intelligence
  • pharmaceutical industry and/or contract research organisations
  • animal welfare and protection
  • science communication
  • regulation, law, humanities, or other lay subject

The successful candidates will possess excellent communication and influencing skills, the ability to work as part of a team, and the ability to evaluate complex issues to reach a consensus.

This will be a 3 year appointment with the possibility of re-appointment.

Read more information and details of how to apply.

The closing date for applications is 11pm, Monday 3 November 2026.

We value and promote diversity and are committed to equality of opportunity for all and appointments made on merit.
