Pizza chain Papa John’s has announced plans to close 43 of its restaurants across the UK as part of a strategic review of its operations. In addition, the company’s goal is to focus on the development of innovative store formats moving forward.

The takeaway chain has announced that the “underpowered” sites will be closed by mid-May following discussions with team members.

The company has not yet confirmed the number of employees affected by these closures.

Papa John’s has more than 5,900 locations worldwide, of which 450 are located in the UK. Great Britain represents its second largest market after the United States.

Earlier this month, the chain announced that the sites to be closed had contributed to two-thirds of its operating losses for the fourth quarter of 2023.

Chris Phylactou, chief executive of Papa Johns UK, said: “Our priority is our team members, who will be fully supported throughout this process.

“Our aim is to work with the affected team members and try to find redeployment opportunities where possible.

“We understand the impact this has on our team members and are committed to supporting them during this time.”

He further mentioned that the closings would allow the company to direct resources elsewhere, which would support “long-term growth.”

Papa John’s plans to revamp its UK menu with fresher ingredients, new products and great deals.

The company announced plans to open sites that differ from traditional stores, and plans for cooperation with large retailers will be revealed in the coming months. In addition, Papa John’s already has a presence in holiday parks and attractions across the UK.
