More than 1,000 local councillors across Britain have signed a ‘Pledge for Palestine’ ahead of key local elections in May, campaigners say.

The pledge, launched by the Palestine Solidarity Campaign (PSC), commits councillors to uphold what it describes as the rights of the Palestinian people and to ensure their councils are not ‘complicit’ in alleged violations of international law by Israel, including through the divestment of pension funds from companies linked to arms production.

PSC reports that the signees come from a wide range of political parties, with significant numbers from the Greens, Labour and Liberal Democrats, as well as representatives from the SNP, Plaid Cymru, Conservatives, local groups and independents.

Supporters say the move reflects growing concern over ethical investment and solidarity with Palestinians, while critics argue the campaign could have a negative impact on community relations.
