Ambassador for a Day (AFAD) is a national essay competition for girls between 15 to 18 years of age, run by the British Embassy in Tunisia. AFAD winners will be selected to shadow the Ambassador for one day, to see first-hand how girls can become leaders and advocates for change. This promises to be an unforgettable opportunity to build skills in diplomacy, confidence, and leadership.

How to apply

All girls aged 15 to 18 as of 1 September 2025, and who are not at university, are encouraged to enter the competition. The theme for this year’s International Day of the Girl is “The girl I am, the change I lead: girls on the frontlines of crisis”. To participate, submit a video or short essay in English answering one of the following questions:

  1. As Ambassador for a Day, how would you support girls leading change in times of crisis—whether in their communities, schools, or homes?

  2. Consider an example of a girl or woman who led during a crisis and helped drive positive change. What can we learn from her leadership?

Written answers should be less than 250 words. Video entries should be no longer than two minutes. Entries that do not meet these criteria will be disqualified. We encourage girls from all backgrounds to apply.

We encourage girls from all backgrounds living in Tunisia, aged 15 to 18 years old to apply.

Terms and conditions

The competition is open to girls whose prime country of residence is Tunisia, who are not at university and who are aged between 15 to 18 years old as of 1 September 2025.

There is no entry fee.

If the winners need to travel for an event or an activity, the British Embassy or one of its Embassy Partners will cover the reasonable travel expenses for the winners and one chaperone.

The content of the essays and videos must be original. They must not be written or created using AI and they must not have been used for applying to similar initiatives.

Entries must be submitted via Ambassador for a Day – 2025

Together with the entry, each candidate must include the following contact details: name, date of birth, email address, and their telephone number. These details will be used to inform candidates about the results of the competition.

Only one entry will be accepted per person. Multiple entries from the same person will be disqualified.

Closing date for entry will be 11:59pm, Friday 26 September 2025. After this date, no further entries to the competition will be permitted.

No responsibility can be accepted for entries not received for whatever reason. We will be seeking that:

  • the winners agree to be photographed and/or filmed during public and online engagements within the Ambassador for a Day campaign in order to promote the initiative
  • the winners must be available to travel to Tunis
  • winners under 18 must have a chaperone who is over 21 years old (parent, teacher, or guardian) to travel to Tunis

The Embassy reserves the right to change the date and order of awards if necessary. In such an event participants will be notified.

The Embassy will collect, store and process the personal data of entrants for the purposes of judging the competition in accordance with data protection laws and regulations.

By entering this competition, the entrant and her lawful representative is indicating her agreement to be bound by these terms and conditions.
