Exterior St John restaurant Smithfield

I think we can all agree that books and baked goods are two of life’s most sensational simple pleasures. And luckily for us Londoners, there’s a shiny new spot in the capital city where we can indulge in both in ample measure. Two legendary London locales have joined forces, and it might just be the most perfect partnership of all time.

One of London’s most iconic eateries, St. JOHNhas just set up shop right beside the London Review Bookshop. The new café is nestled neatly next to the beloved Bloomsbury bookshop, deliciously filling the cake-shaped hole that was left by the former London Review Cake Shop.

St. JOHN at the London Review Bookshop

Since opening the doors of its very first restaurant back in 1994, St. JOHN has become part of London’s furniture, and has since set up a whole host of restaurants, bakeries, and wine shops. Each of which are inspired by the philosophy of ‘purpose and simplicity’. The brand new café will be the latest to join the ever-growing collection, and it will serve up an all-day menu, filled to the brim with signature St. JOHN classics.

The menu will shine a light on St. JOHN’s beloved bakery itemsand Londoners can tuck in to the mouthwatering likes of sourdough loaves, delicious doughnuts, croissants, Eccles cakes, and baked-to-order Madeleines. There will be an array of sandwiches and tarts on offer at lunchtime. And on the days that the bookshop stays open late for eventsthere will be a selection of wines, cocktails and snacks on offer. Now, that sounds like my kind of evening.

📍You’ll find the new St. JOHN cafe next to the London Review Bookshop at 16 Bury Place, WC1A 2JL. It will be open Mondays-Saturdays (8am-6.30pm) and Sundays (12pm-6pm).
