The O2 Academy in Brixton is due to reopen in April, some 16 months after two people were killed in a stampede. The south London music venue closed its doors after an Asake gig on 15 December 2022, which left two people dead and more injured.
But today (Monday 4 March) the O2 Academy Brixton has signed X to confirm it will reopen in a month’s time. The opening nights will see tribute acts from big bands take to the stage.
It comes after Lambeth Council voted to restore the venue’s license – despite initial risks it could be closed permanently. The Metropolitan Police had called on the council to remove its licence, after indicating they had no confidence in the company that owns the Academy to run it.
But as long as the O2 Academy Brixton adheres to a long list of new conditions, the venue was free to reopen. Responding to the decision, Brixton Academy said it was “incredibly grateful” to Lambeth Council and would only reopen with trial events.
In today’s post on X, Brixton Academy wrote: “The O2 Academy Brixton reopens on Friday 19th April with Nirvana UK (tribute to Nirvana) and The Symths (tribute to the Smiths), followed by Friday 26th April with Definitely Maybe (tribute to Oasis) and UK Foo Fighters (tribute to Foo Fighters).” You can Book tickets for the opening nights.
Mother-of-two Rebecca Ikumelo, 33, and security guard Gaby Hutchinson, 23, both died in the incident. A third woman is believed to be still in hospital after suffering serious injuries.
