West Northants Council has announced a new food plan to encourage healthy eating through increasing access to affordable food.

The move is intended to support local growers and producers by championing sustainable and nutritious food sources, with the aim of helping communities across West Northants in accessing good quality food.

Goals of the project include enhancing food choices and security, with the scheme being carried out as a joint venture between the local authority, the University of Northampton, local charities, growers, health experts, businesses, and community groups.

It has been rolled out by the West Northamptonshire Sustainable Food Network (WNSFN) to support its HARVEST 2026 campaign, following two years of research and engagement with residents.

The plan considers barriers such as issues accessing nutritious food and the surge in costs of living, as well as the health and wellbeing effects of diet.

It will also focus on reducing food waste and supporting ‘more sustainable and responsible food procurement’.

Cllr Laura Couse, Cabinet Member for Adult Care and Public Health at West Northamptonshire Council, said: ‘Access to healthy, affordable food plays a crucial role in people’s health and quality of life. This Food Plan demonstrates our commitment to supporting residents to live healthier lives, tackling food insecurity and reducing health inequalities.’

Cllr Couse highlighted the importance of partnership working to strengthen the food system and build a sustainable future.
