Peter Dunphy has been elected as the new Chairman of the Corporation’s Port Health and Environmental Services Committee.

The committee is responsible for vital functions that protect the public and the environment across the Square Mile and beyond – from tackling air pollution and pest control, to environmental health, trading standards, street cleansing, and refuse collection.

It also oversees the operation of the London Port Health Authority, responsible for all port health functions on the tidal Thames; Heathrow Animal Reception Centre, the UK’s only ‘all species’ Live Animal Border Control Post; and the Cemetery and Crematorium in Manor Park.

Newly elected Chairman of the City Corporation’s Port Health and Environmental Services Committee, Peter Dunphy, said:

“This Committee plays a crucial role in keeping London safe, clean and resilient – not just for the Square Mile, but for the capital and the country. From food safety at the border to tackling pollution, supporting bereaved families, and protecting animal welfare, its work supports millions of people every day.

“I’m proud to be taking on this role and will continue to champion the dedicated officers and services that make London a safer, healthier and more sustainable place to live, work and visit.”

Peter Dunphy represents the Ward of Cornhill in the and has served as Common Councillor since 2009. He is also a former Chief Commoner* and has previously chaired the organisation’s Licensing Committee.

Outside of the City Corporation, he has been a director of staffing, private equity, business broking and media production companies, and is a former charity lead trustee, bringing extensive experience across both the private and voluntary sectors.

He succeeds Mary Durcan, who chaired the Committee from 2023 to 2025, during which time the City Corporation adopted a new Circular Economy Framework and introduced its latest air quality strategy, following a 40 percent drop in nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and fine particles (PM10) between 2019 and 2024.

ENDS
