I once thought that vacuum cleaners were not worth spending extra money on. I lived with thin vacuums my whole adult life, and thought they would do as good a job as anything Dyson could throw at me.
Then my thin vacuum cleaner broke. It stopped sucking up dirt and gave a half hearted beep every time I hit the power button before shutting down right away.
I decided to take the plunge and invest in a powerful piece of machinery because in the long run I had probably already spent the equivalent of the Shark Corded Upright Vacuum Cleaner already. The latter cost me a hefty chunk of my salary, and if I wasn’t so keen on cool technology, I never would have done it. But I’m so glad I did – even though it’s now down to £131.99 on Amazon.
When I first unboxed the Shark vacuum, I was in awe. The sturdiness of the handle amazed me, and the lift-away dust tray – which opens from the bottom so I never have to touch anything grim again – changed my cleaning life.
But that wasn’t even the coolest feature. As soon as I turned on the vacuum and tilted the handle back to activate the anti-hair wrapping function, the headlights came on.

They were powerful enough to make me regret all my previous vacuum cleaners that clearly left behind a fine film of dust that I had never noticed. In the glare of the headlights, I got to see firsthand as every speck was dragged into the shark.
Thanks to the attachments, the Shark Hoover makes light work of crumbs on couches and carpeted stairs, and the longer attachment even reaches the awkward little space someone decided to build into my wall for no reason other than pure meanness.
The Shark vacuum did it all – it has powerful suction, it reaches everywhere, it’s easy enough to maneuver and turn into a handheld, and it doesn’t get clogged with hair. Oh, did I mention it’s basically silent and has a cord long enough to reach my entire home? I’m actually looking forward to cleaning day now, just so I can play with all the functions.
I’m not the only one who loves the vacuum. It has a 4.7 star rating on Amazon from 12,079 reviews. Of the negatives, some complained that it was “very heavy” – which it is, until you detach the motor from the main body.
You can get the Shark vacuum for £131.99 at Amazon and £149 at Shark. Alternatively, try the Miele Complete C2 Cat & Dog Vacuum, which costs £239 at John Lewis.
