Locals were going mad for the grand re-arrival of the popular high street store
Marks and Spencer has reopened on Putney High Street, with clips showing eager shopping queuing to get into the store. It’s a highly anticipated reopening, after the store shut its doors to the South-West London district around eight years ago after serving the local Wandsworth community for 91 years.
It was meant to reopen on April 1, but was opened five weeks early after toil from workers who were reportedly in-store well after 10pm on some evenings. The grand opening on 59 Putney High Street includes a foodhall, menswear and womenswear, fitting rooms, Wi-Fi, a bakery, flowers and plants, and even a wine ordering section.
Today (Wednesday, February 25) it is open from 8am to 9pm. But from tomorrow it will open 7am, closing at 9pm from Monday to Saturday. While Sunday hours are from 11am to 5pm.
MP Fleur Anderson was also at the store earlier. Sporting an all-blue outfit she took to X to share a video of her at the grand opening.
She said: “Marks and Spencer is returning to Putney, it’s really exciting. (It) first opened here 99 years ago, it’s about to reopen in a few minutes. You can see the queue building up here. Lots of people have been waiting here for quite a long time. It’s brilliant to see Marks and Spencer returning to the heart of Putney High Street.”
In another video filmed within the store, she said: It’s great for the high street, it’s great to have the jobs coming in here, it’s great to have this beautiful looking store, and it just shows that Putney High Street really is on the up.”
It comes as Putney has been hit in recent times with the ‘decline of the high street’ after travel retailer WH Smith has closed, with its interior being gutted, according to Putney News .
