Looks

The two extra doors make the Mini 5Door longer and as a result we think it’s lost some of its cheeky charm, but the interior is beautifully laid out with a retro feel. Standard versions come with a digital radio, electric windows and air conditioning which add to its premium feel and it’s easy to express your identity though the vast range of colour and interior options.

Practicality

The extra doors make the Mini a more functional choice for families, but it’s compact nature and small boot mean it’s a squeeze to fit in car seats and prams. Rear headroom is good for adult passengers and clever indents in the back of the front seats give welcome extra legroom.

Driving

The 5Door still drives like a Mini should it’s a lot of fun! We think the combination of a strong range of diesel and petrol engines, accurate steering and a firm but comfortable ride make this one of the most enjoyable small cars to drive.

Safety

The latest Mini hasn’t yet been tested by independent safety experts Euro NCAP, but it’s credentials are good six airbags and three ISOFIX child seat mounts. Options include autonomous braking, which will warn you about (and try to prevent) a collision and parking assist, which uses ultrasound sensors to help your car for you.

Running costs

You can opt for the brand’s excellent value £275 TLC pack which covers servicing and maintenance for five years or 50,000 miles and includes parts, labour, oil and the odd brake fluid change. Fuel economy across the range is good, petrol models offer around 60 mpg and diesels up to 80 mpg, low engine emissions means a frugal or zero road tax bill.

GH verdict

The Mini 5Door is a fun to drive, premium small car which will hold its value well. It makes a great runaround or first car, but is still too small to suit families with young children.

Also consider

Audi A1 or the Citroen DS3

Price range from £14,350 £20,050, mini.co.uk
