Mazda CX5 review SUV

Looks

The Mazda CX5 is a low and sporty, we like its sharp lines and sleek lights, but it’s let down by a dull colour range – only nine are available, mixing mostly blues and greys with a couple of whites and two reds.

Practicality

There’s plenty of room for four inside, although a third adult in the back could feel a little squeezed. The boot is one of the biggest in the class with a low loading lip and easy to fold rear seats for a huge amount of extra space when you need it.



Driving

All Mazdas have a feel of their of MX5 sports car about them and the CX5 is no exception, this is a big car but it doesn’t feel it behind the wheel. The steering is quick to respond and the gearshift nice and crisp making this one of the sportiest Crossovers to drive, but comfort doesn’t suffer as the CX5 rides smoothly over bumps. Front and rear sensors fitted on all models make parking easy and fourwheel drive can be added if you choose a diesel engine.

Safety

Every CX5 gets an impressive list of safety kit, including front and curtain airbags, stability control and an automatic braking system that prevents low speed bumps although it’s missing some of the more advanced safety technology you’ll find on its rival the Nissan Qashqai.



Running costs

By using weightsaving technology, the CX5 is more fuel efficient than most rivals with diesel models claiming to average around 60mpg. Adding an automatic gearbox will reduce that slightly, but it will still be reasonably efficient. Mazdas have a good reliability record, too.
