I think you’re all probably aware by now that I’m really rather fond of our capital city. So much so that I reckon I could write an 100,000-word dissertation on how much I love it. And if there was a university degree dedicated to bragging about how great London is, I think I’d pass it with First-Class Honours. So, whilst we’re on the subject: today I’m going to be boasting about the fact that London is officially home to four of the most prestigious universities on Earth. Not bad, hey?

Times Higher Education has recently released their World Reputation Rankings list. Now in its 14th year, the annual list ranks the world’s very best universities, based on their academic reputation and global prestige. The rather lengthy list details 300 institutions from across 38 countries. And whilst no London universities made the top ten (ugh), London was, in fact, the city with the most universities to make the top fifty. And surely that has to count for something, right?

The 2025 rankings used ‘revamped methodology’ to provide deeper insights than in previous years. The results were based on various points of research, including the world’s largest invite-only academic opinion survey, which saw over 55,000 global scholars respond.

So, which London universities made the cut, I hear you ask? Well, Imperial College London was the highest London institution to make the list, coming in at number 14. University College London nabbed the 25th spot, London School of Economics came in at number 36, and King’s College London at number 45. Rather unsurprisingly, the University of Oxford and the University of Cambridge were both perched very high up on the list, with Oxford at number 2 and Cambridge at number 4. But considering that they’re both mere moments from the capital cityyou won’t hear any complaining from us. For now, that is…
