John Travolta teared up as he paid tribute to Olivia Newton-John, his friend and late Grease co-star, at the Oscars on Sunday night.
“They’ve touched our hearts, they’ve made us smile, and became dear friends, who we will always remain hopelessly devoted to,” the 69-year-old actor said.
He could barely finish his sentence as his voice quivered and his eyes began to well up at the awards show in Los Angeles.
His remarks were a nod to a ballad sung by Newton-John’s character Sandy in the 1978 musical.
Newton-John died at the age of 73 in August last year after a long battle with breast cancer.
Her voice and beauty helped turn her into one of the biggest stars of the seventies, and she is credited with selling more than 100 million records over the course of a five-decade career.
The Grammy-winning superstar’s best-known hits included “Physical” and “You’re the One That I Want”.
