An aerial view of Clapham Junction station, with trains pulling in and out of the station

Whenever I’m asked to put my two cents in on which London station I believe to be the best of the bunch, I’m ever so quick to start waxing lyrical about Clapham Junction. It’s so handy, it’s so easy to navigate, it has so many train lines running through it. My only complaint? It’s really rather chaotic. So, the prospect of Clapham Junction station undergoing a major transformation in a bid to ease a bit of that chaos comes as blooming brilliant news.

Wandsworth Council has recently shortlisted three potential plans to improve the sizeable south London station. With approximately 2,000 trains passing through the station everyday; Clapham Junction is one of the busiest stations in Europe in regards to train volume. It also sees over 20 million passengers pass through its barriers each year. So, it’s certainly paid its dues over the years, and is well-deserving of a bit of TLC, don’t you think?

Clapham Junction station’s transformation plans

Clapham Junction’s upcoming glow-up is likely to include new crossings and entrances being constructed, connections being upgraded, and overall capacity being increased. The council agreed to draw up a masterplan back in 2023, and are now working with the Greater London Authority, Transport for London, Network Rail, and the landowners to get the ball rolling.

Stage one of the plan has just been completed. This stage was the ‘technical analysis’ of the station, and involved examining more ambitious options for how the station’s capacity could be upgraded alongside serving the wider Clapham Junction community. Now, having identified the three protentional options, they’re moving onto stage two. Stage two will look closely at the plans (each of which involve giving the station either a new over-bridge or underpass), identifying how they would each realistically work and establishing the design principles of each of them. This stage is set to be complete by summer 2026.

The wider Clapham Junction area has been earmarked to receive at least 3,000 new homes, shops and buildings over the next decade. And so the authorities want to ensure that any improvements made to the station also have a positive impact on the area as a whole.

So, all aboard the glow-up express. Destination: transformation.
