Looks
Although it’s due to be replaced, the Sportage is still a greatlooking car both inside and out. It’s hard to believe it’s not much bigger than a family hatchback as its raised height, distinctive shaped grill and sharp lines give it a rugged look. Inside it isn’t as plush as some newer rivals and some of the plastics feel hard and cheap when you touch them.
Practicality
There’s lots of space in the Sportage for a growing family, with room in the back to fit three adults along with two ISOFIX child seat points. The boot has space for pushchairs, bikes and everything else a family carries, and the back seats split and fold down when you need extra space but those stylish looks mean the windows are narrow, making it seem smaller inside than it is.
Driving
The Sportage has a high seating position, giving you an excellent view of the road, but although it’s comfortable it can start to feel bouncy on bumpier roads. You can choose different steering settings, to give more control while parking or increased feel for the car if you’re driving faster. The narrow rear window looks good from the outside, but limits visibility fortunately, rear parking sensors come as standard on all but the most basic model.
Safety
The Sportage scores a full fivestar Euro NCAP crash test rating with front, side and curtain airbags that run along the side of the car. All models in the range get the same levels of safety equipment like systems to stop the car skidding and to monitor your tyre pressure, along with headrests to help prevent whiplash which is unusual.
Running costs
With a new Kia Sportage coming in early 2016, you can negotiate some good deals on this current car. It’s not the most economical of 4x4s – newer models are more efficient – but you do gets lots of equipment and extra peace of mind thanks to Kia’s sevenyear, 100,000 mile warranty.
GH verdict
It may be old but it still looks smart and if you’re prepared to haggle you could get a well equipped, safe family car for a good price.
