But although he remains in the line of succession, does the senior Royal family member still have his prince title?

King Charles’ brother is effectively no longer a royal, becoming a commoner after he was stripped by the monarch of both his right to be a prince and his dukedom late last year over his association with paedophile financier Jeffrey Epstein.

Is Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor still a prince?

In October 2025, His Majesty King Charles initiated a formal process to remove the Style, Titles and Honours of Prince Andrew, which meant he was no longer credited as the Duke of York.

The Royal family member, who served as a UK trade envoy between 2001 and 2011, has since been known as Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor.

Following this announcement, he also moved out of the Royal Lodge in Windsor and relocated to a property on the Sandringham Estate.

In a statement at the time, Buckingham Palace said: “Prince Andrew will now be known as Andrew Mountbatten Windsor.

“His lease on Royal Lodge has, to date, provided him with legal protection to continue in residence.

“Formal notice has now been served to surrender the lease, and he will move to alternative private accommodation.

“These censures are deemed necessary, notwithstanding the fact that he continues to deny the allegations against him.”

Buckingham Palace added: “Their Majesties wish to make clear that their thoughts and utmost sympathies have been, and will remain with, the victims and survivors of any and all forms of abuse.”

Why has Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor been arrested?

Andrew has been arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office and is in police custody, Thames Valley Police confirmed on Thursday (February 19).

The news comes as pictures circulated online appearing to show unmarked police cars attending Wood Farm on the Sandringham Estate in Norfolk, with plain-clothed officers appearing to gather outside Andrew’s home on his 66th birthday.

What allegations has Andrew faced?

Andrew has faced allegations, which he strenuously denies, that he sexually assaulted a teenage Virginia Giuffre after she was trafficked by Epstein.

He paid millions to Ms Giuffre, a woman he has claimed never to have met, to settle a civil sexual assault claim in 2022.

Andrew stepped down from royal duties in 2019 after an interview on BBC Newsnight, but the publication of Ms Giuffre’s posthumous memoir, and the US government’s release of documents from Epstein’s estate, brought more scrutiny over his relationship with the financier.

This is what led to the King officially stripping his disgraced brother of both his HRH style and his prince title in 2025.

Andrew has repeatedly denied all wrongdoing in relation to Epstein, and said he did not “see, witness or suspect any behaviour of the sort that subsequently led to his arrest and conviction”.

Epstein was found dead in his cell at a federal jail in Manhattan, New York, in August 2019 while he awaited trial on sex trafficking charges. His death was ruled a suicide.
