More than eight out of ten of those who completed the Line Manager Induction Programme said they would recommend the course to colleagues.

A similar proportion of line managers said they felt either ‘very confident’ or ‘extremely confident’ they understood their role and responsibilities as a line manager after completing it.

Throughout 2024 there has been an increase in survey scores from the Line Manager Induction Programme of line managers reporting increasing confidence. This highlights the growing focus on supportive training in this area.

A great start for line managers

“Line managers have a significant impact on people’s day to day experiences of working in the Civil Service,”  said Carol Bernard, Executive Director, Line Manager Capability Programme, pictured.

“So I’m delighted that the Line Management Induction Programme is getting our new line managers off to a great start, giving them confidence and skills and preparing them to embrace the new Civil Service Line Management Standards..

“The Standards are already raising the profile and esteem of line management and helping to put excellent line management at the heart of everything we do.”

Supporting new standards

The Line Manager Induction Programme was introduced in November 2023 and has been completed by more than 4,300 civil servants since.

Some 85 per cent of those who had done the programme said they would recommend it to their colleagues while 81 per cent felt ‘very confident’ or ‘extremely confident’ they understood the responsibilities of their role afterwards.

The Civil Service Line Management Standards were introduced in June and by September were already featuring among the top ten most popular learning resources on Civil Service Learning.
