One woman took on a 2.5kg lasagne challenge at a London restaurant, but said that one thing she didn’t account for made eating the giant meal so much more difficult

If you love pasta, this London restaurant that serves a lasagne weighing in at 2.5kg might be the perfect place for you. Everyone loves good food, and there’s no shortage of it in London. From chain restaurants to independent cafes and amazing street food, you can find just about anything you want to eat in the capital.

Including, apparently, more than two kilos worth of lasagne. One woman on social media recently visited a restaurant in London that serves a 2.5kg lasagne – enough to feed six people – as a food challenge.

Kate Ovens visited Tom’s Pasta, which is located within the Hackney Downs Studios in East London, to take on their brand new food challenge, which tasks you with wolfing down a massive portion of pasta and slow-cooked ragu.

She said in a TikTok video: “I am at Tom’s Pasta taking on their brand new 2.5-kilo lasagne challenge. This thing is literally smothered in Parmesan cheese. The meat has been cooked for 12 hours, there’s tonnes of béchamel [sauce] in here – I can’t even tell you how many layers [it is] – and it smells amazing.”

The giant lasagne is filled with beef shin ragu that has been slow cooked for 12 hours to create delicious, melt-in-the-mouth meat. The ragu is then topped with béchamel sauce and pasta sheets before the process is repeated again to create the layers that a lasagne is known for.

The colossus weighs in at 2.5kg when it is delivered to the table, at which point you can add Parmesan cheese to the top. You get to dictate how much is added, and as Kate found out, less might be more – as it was the cheese that eventually caused her to fail the challenge.

She added: “I think the cheese on its own is a challenge. But in all honesty, it is my fault. I got to determine how much Parmesan cheese was added to this challenge, and I just kept asking them to keep going, even when they had originally stopped. So I say this challenge is 2.5 kilos, but I think it’s more like 2.6 or even 2.7.”

Kate admitted at the end of her TikTok video that she was unable to finish the dish, so she failed the challenge.

However, unlike most food challenges, you’re not given a time limit on the giant pasta dish and can take as long as you like to eat it – so your only enemy is your own stomach.

As Kate noted, this detail is vital with lasagne because the dish was so hot she had to leave it for some time to cool down enough before she could tuck in, so having a time limit would have left her mouth burnt long before her stomach was full.

In the caption, Kate explained that if you want to take on the lasagne challenge for yourself, you must contact Tom’s Pasta ahead of time to let them know you intend to try it, as they need time to make the dish for you. And if you’re successful in polishing off all 2.5kg, you get the meal for free.

Tom’s Pasta is open from Tuesday to Saturday from 5.30pm until 10pm. They are famed for their lasagne dishes, as well as their tiramisu, and customers who reviewed the location particularly praised its value for money.

One reviewer said: “Food was amazing from start to finish. One of the best lasagnes I have ever had! Service was really attentive too. Can’t wait to come back again soon!”

Another added: “Cannot beat the value and will be leaving absolutely stuffed.”
