They get the classics right but how about a pizza sandwich?
Theo’s Pizza is a London institution known for its delicious aubergine, artichoke and nduja pizzas. They get the classics right, but how about a pizza sandwich?
A panuozzo is a traditional Italian “pizza sandwich” originating from Gragnano, a historic town near Naples. They are made from pizza dough and filled with meats, vegetables or cheese, before being wood-fired.
During lunch hours, Theo’s serves up a selection of these panuozzos, all for less than a tenner. If you want to grab one, you’ll need to head down to either their Camberwell or Elephant & Castle restaurant between 12 and 5pm midweek.
I decided to try the pumpkin and gorgonzola option, which costs £8. While I waited for the panuozzo, I watched the traffic and people pass by at a window seat overlooking the infamous Elephant & Castle roundabout.
When my food arrived, I was underwhelmed by how small it was, but decided not to make any hasty decisions until I tried it for myself. The pizza base was crispy and light, from being wood-fired on site.
The pumpkin filling was so soft that it melted in your mouth and the subtle hints of gorgonzola cut through in a lovely medley of flavours. This was perfectly paired with sweet caramelised onion and zesty rocket for a bit of a kick.
Possibly my favourite part was the frosted glass the waitress brought out with my Coca-Cola. A crisp cold drink always adds to any dining experience.
While I thoroughly enjoyed the panuozzo, I definitely felt like it could have done with some more filling. It’s the type of dish I would order again if I was looking for a light bite at lunchtime and avoid if I was after something a little more filling.
