Science is brought to life from the earliest years at the Belsize Park prep school (Image: Sarum Hall School)

Lessons are deliberately practical and hands-on, helping pupils to develop their confidence and a genuine love of learning.

The school aims to spark curiosity and a sense of wonder through its science lessons.

Rather than memorising facts, pupils are encouraged to observe carefully, ask questions and think in an evidence-based way.

From fossils and plants to digestion and dissections, pupils explore the breadth and excitement of science through real, hands-on investigation.

Practical learning is at the heart of the curriculum.

Last term, Year 4 pupils became engineers, designing and building matchstick structures using strong triangular shapes.

Their buildings were placed on a jelly ‘earthquake’ base and tested to see which designs could withstand a tremor.

In Year 5, pupils explored forces by creating parachutes from recycled plastic bags, discovering how size affects air resistance and velocity. This helped pupils to understand gravity, drag and how real parachutes work.

Through excitement, experimentation and encouragement, science at Sarum Hall School inspires confident, curious learners who are ready for the future.
