We are looking for an Honorary Consul in Lower Saxony.

As a candidate you should have a very good understanding and knowledge of Lower Saxony and an established network that will help you to support British interests and to provide support to British Nationals who find themselves in difficulty. The position may also involve helping the British Embassy respond to a crisis.

As a British Honorary Consul, you will work under the supervision of the Deputy Head of Mission and Consul-General in Berlin. You will work closely with our consular, internal politics and public diplomacy teams. Depending on the needs of the British Embassy you will have the opportunity to work alongside other sections.

With your help we would like to continue to build on the particular relationship which Lower Saxony and the United Kingdom have enjoyed.

The British Embassy in Germany is part of a worldwide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas.

An Honorary Consul is a voluntary position defined by the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations.

Appointment

The appointment will initially be for a term of 1 year.  At the end of the initial term, the appointment may be renewed for a further 3 years, subject to the requirements of the superintending post (the embassy). Any further term will be for 3 years.

Number of hours

You are expected to work no more than 4 hours in an average week. 

Honorarium

The appointment is unsalaried and carries no entitlement to a pension or any other benefit. However, there is a small annual honorarium.

Requirements

Security Clearance: your appointment is subject to you receiving security clearance from the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO).

Conflicts of interest: you must not engage in any occupation or undertaking which might conflict with the interests of His Majesty’s Government.

Exequatur: Your appointment is subject to you receiving an exequatur from the German Foreign Office.

Applicants should submit their CV (in English, up to 2 pages) and covering letter (in English, no more than 2 pages) setting out their reason for applying the role for the role and how they meet the above criteria.
