A new website teases the return of The Star in Chester Road, which has been shuttered since July 2025.

It says people can sign up for sneak previews and news of the launch in March, adding: “A new chapter for Highgate’s local soul. Refreshed, reimagined, and reopening soon.

“What’s changing? More than you think, but exactly what you want. We’re preserving the authentic pub soul while injecting a bold new energy into every corner of The Star.”

A video of the refit of The Star and first storey bar The Star Above was posted on Instagram.

The Star is rising again… and you’re invited.”

The Ham&High reported in October how two councillors had launched a petition for The Star to be relisted as an asset of community value (ACV).

Labour councillors Anna Wright and Camron Aref-Adib were behind the Change.org petition to “help protect this much-loved local pub from any sale that might result in proposals to redevelop the site”.

At the time the pub’s owners Stonegate were seeking new landlords and had no plans to let the pub stand empty.

But local conservation group The Highgate Society backed the petition which gives the community “first refusal” on a property if the owner decides to sell and can also be considered if any planning application is made for change of use.

Cllr Wright said: “The petition was a huge success and reached over 1,000 signatures.

“This evidence of local support was used to support our application to Camden’s planning department to award asset of community value status to The Star pub.

“We were successful so The Star is now officially designated as a Camden “asset of community value” which gives the pub a layer of protection within planning policy.”

Dating back to 1896, The Star was originally called The Totnes Castle and was closed for more than three years before reopening in April 2022.

Over the years, it has hosted community events, from a weekly film club to poetry and comedy nights, a quiz, an eco group, art exhibitions, and Labour Party meetings with attendees including local resident Ed Miliband.
